One lesser-known fact about Michigan is that it is the only U.S. state made up of two large peninsulas: the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The two sections are separated by the Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet.

For much of Michigan’s early history, traveling between the two peninsulas required a ferry. That changed in 1957 with the opening of the Mackinac Bridge, which stretches about 5 miles across the straits and connects Mackinaw City in the Lower Peninsula with St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula.

The split geography has also helped create two somewhat distinct regional identities. Residents of the Upper Peninsula are often called “Yoopers,” while people from the Lower Peninsula are sometimes jokingly called “Trolls” because they live “under” the Mackinac Bridge.

Michigan’s unusual two-peninsula layout is one of the most distinctive geographic features of any state in the country.
