From 1836 to 1845, Texas existed as the Republic of Texas — a fully sovereign country with its own president, currency (the Texas dollar), and navy. It even negotiated treaties with France, the U.S., and the U.K. before voluntarily joining the United States in 1845. Some Texans still fly the "Sixth Flag" with pride, a nod to its independent past.
