🏔️ Idaho Is Home to a Massive Lava Field That Looks Like the Moon

Most people picture Idaho as farmland and mountains.

But southern Idaho contains one of the largest volcanic lava fields in the lower 48 states: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.

This otherworldly landscape was formed by volcanic eruptions that occurred between 15,000 and 2,000 years ago — relatively recent in geological terms.

Here’s the rarely known twist:

In the 1960s, Apollo astronauts trained there because NASA believed the terrain closely resembled the surface of the Moon.

The vast black lava flows, cinder cones, and lava tubes were ideal for practicing geological exploration before lunar missions.

So yes — parts of Idaho literally helped prepare Americans to walk on the Moon.

Not bad for a state most people associate with potatoes.
