Vermont Has a Town With Its Own “Eternal Flame” That Has Been Burning Since the 1800s

Deep in the small town of Burlington, there’s an old railroad lantern mounted on a pole near the waterfront that has been kept burning continuously since 1899.
It’s called the “Eternal Flame of the USS Maine”, originally lit in honor of sailors killed when the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor.

Local volunteers still refill and maintain it, keeping the flame alive for well over a century.

Most Americans — and even many Vermonters — have no idea this historic flame even exists.
