New Mexico Has a Secret 100-Mile-Long “Musical Road” Created by Sand

In parts of the New Mexico desert—especially near the White Sands region—the wind moves across gypsum dunes in such a specific way that the sand can “sing” or “boom” like a musical instrument.

This natural phenomenon, called booming dunes, produces deep humming or droning tones that can last several seconds, sometimes sounding like distant drums or a low-flying aircraft.

The sound is caused by millions of sand grains vibrating in perfect synchrony as they slide down the dune’s surface. New Mexico is one of the very few places on Earth where this mysterious “musical sand” can be heard.
