Kentucky Is Home to the World’s Largest Known Cave System

Most people know Kentucky for bourbon and horse racing — but few realize it sits on top of the longest cave system ever discovered on Earth.

Located in Mammoth Cave National Park, Mammoth Cave has more than 420 miles of mapped passageways — and scientists believe there are many more miles still undiscovered.

To put that into perspective:
If you stretched the explored sections end to end, it would be longer than the distance from Louisville to Chicago.

The cave system includes:

• Underground rivers
• Massive cathedral-like chambers
• Rare cave-adapted species found nowhere else
• Geological formations millions of years old

It was first explored extensively in the early 1800s — and astonishingly, new sections are still being discovered today.
