Puerto Rico has its own “alien-looking” bioluminescent bays—more than anywhere else in the world.

Puerto Rico is home to three of the world\'s five bioluminescent bays, including Mosquito Bay on Vieques, which holds the Guinness World Record for the brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth. The glow is caused by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates that light up when disturbed. What makes this even more rare is that the specific combination of water conditions, temperature, and ecosystem balance needed to sustain this glow is almost impossible to replicate elsewhere.
