Texas Once Had Its Own Navy
Most people know Texas was an independent republic before joining the United States, but few realize it had a fully functioning navy. During the Republic of Texas era (1836–1845), the Texas Navy defended the young nation’s coastline, fought pirates, and even engaged in battles with Mexico. At its peak, it had several warships and played a crucial role in securing Texas independence.
Fun twist? When Texas joined the U.S., it kept ownership of its public lands, but the navy was absorbed into the U.S. Navy — making it one of the few states to ever operate its own official maritime force.
