A Giant Prehistoric Serpent Is Hidden in the Ohio Countryside

One of the most fascinating and surprisingly little-known facts about Ohio is that the state is home to the Great Serpent Mound, an enormous prehistoric earthwork shaped like a snake.

Located in Adams County in southern Ohio, the massive serpent stretches for roughly 1,300 feet across a ridge overlooking the surrounding countryside. Viewed from above, its unusual design becomes especially impressive: the serpent has a winding body, a tightly coiled tail, and a large oval feature positioned near its open mouth.

What makes the site particularly mysterious is that researchers still debate exactly who constructed it, when it was built, and what it originally meant. Archaeological evidence has led to different theories connecting the earthwork with prehistoric cultures that lived in the region at different times.

Unlike many ancient earthworks found throughout Ohio, Serpent Mound does not appear to have been constructed primarily as a burial mound. Instead, its enormous animal-shaped design suggests it may have held ceremonial, spiritual, astronomical, or symbolic importance.

Researchers have also investigated whether portions of the serpent's design correspond with astronomical events, including the position of the sun around the summer solstice. Exactly how intentional these alignments were remains a subject of discussion.

Perhaps the most remarkable part is simply its survival. Long before the United States existed, people living in what would eventually become Ohio undertook the enormous task of shaping the landscape into a serpent hundreds of yards long.

Today, the Great Serpent Mound remains one of Ohio's most extraordinary archaeological landmarks—and a reminder that the state's history stretches back thousands of years before European settlement.
