Nebraska is home to the largest hand-planted forest in the United States. 🌲

The Nebraska National Forest may sound like an ancient natural woodland, but part of it has a surprising origin. Beginning in the early 1900s, people planted trees across Nebraska's otherwise largely treeless Sandhills to demonstrate that a forest could be established on the Great Plains. Over the following decades, millions of trees were planted by hand. The Bessey Ranger District near Halsey became famous as one of America's largest human-planted forests—an especially unexpected sight in a state better known for sweeping prairies, farmland, and wide-open grasslands.
