Most of the state is officially in the Alaska Time Zone, but its sheer size means western towns like Adak are geographically closer to Hawaii’s time zone. This mismatch means during deep winter, people can start their day in near-total darkness well into midday — and in summer, the opposite happens, with sunsets close to midnight.
