Washington Has a “Ghost Town” Buried Underwater

At the bottom of Lake Roosevelt, near the Grand Coulee Dam, lies the remains of entire towns that were flooded in the 1940s when the Columbia River was dammed to create hydroelectric power.

Whole communities, including schools, homes, and roads, were submerged forever, and on rare occasions when the water level drops, parts of these ghost towns — like old foundations and streets — can still be seen.

This underwater graveyard of history is so well-preserved that scuba divers have compared it to a time capsule from the 1930s and 1940s.
