In the late 1800s, the U.S. government funded an agricultural experiment near Summerville to see if tea plants could survive in American soil and climate. The project eventually moved to Wadmalaw Island, where the plants thrived so well that they’re still alive today—making South Carolina home to the only large-scale working tea plantation in the United States.
