Miami Was Founded by a Woman
While most major U.S. cities were founded by men, Miami is one of the very few that owes its existence to a woman — Julia Tuttle.
Who was she? A wealthy citrus grower from Ohio, Julia Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon, to extend his railroad to the area by sending him a bouquet of orange blossoms in the dead of winter — proving Miami had escaped a devastating freeze that hit the rest of Florida.
Result? The railroad came, and Miami was officially incorporated in 1896 — making Julia Tuttle known as the "Mother of Miami."
