Wyoming Once Had a Nuclear “Missile Forest”

During the Cold War, vast stretches of eastern Wyoming were quietly transformed into one of the most heavily armed nuclear landscapes on Earth.

Hidden beneath ranch land and prairie are hundreds of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) silos, operated out of F.E. Warren Air Force Base.

At its peak, the region housed Minuteman missiles spaced miles apart in reinforced underground silos — each capable of reaching targets across the globe in about 30 minutes.

What makes this especially rare knowledge?

From the surface, many sites look like nothing more than fenced patches of grass with a small concrete lid. Beneath that lid once sat (and in many cases still sits) a nuclear missile system on constant alert.

In terms of nuclear firepower per capita, Wyoming has been one of the most strategically important states in America — despite being the least populated.
