Did You Know!

Many people know Iowa for its farmland, but few realize that Iowa is home to one of the world's largest collections of prehistoric Native American burial mounds. Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeastern Iowa contains more than 200 ancient mounds, some shaped like bears, birds, and other animals. Built by Indigenous cultures more than 1,000 years ago, these earthworks are considered some of the most significant archaeological treasures in North America. The animal-shaped mounds are especially rare, as very few places in the world contain such large concentrations of effigy earthworks still preserved today.
