Kentucky Once Had a “Moonbow” You Can See at Night
A rarely known fact about Kentucky is that it is home to one of the only places in the world where you can regularly see a “moonbow.”
At Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, located near Corbin, the mist from Cumberland Falls sometimes creates a rainbow at night using moonlight instead of sunlight.
These rare nighttime rainbows are called moonbows, and they require very specific conditions:
- A bright full moon
- Clear skies
- Enough mist from the waterfall
- The moon positioned at the correct angle
Because those conditions rarely line up, very few places on Earth regularly produce visible moonbows. Kentucky’s Cumberland Falls is famous for being one of the best places in the world to see one.
Locals often call the falls “The Niagara of the South,” and on the right night, visitors can witness this glowing silver rainbow stretching through the mist. 🌙🌈
