The largest living organism on Earth isn’t a whale—it’s a massive underground fungus in Malheur National Forest.

Known scientifically as Armillaria ostoyae (often called the “honey fungus”), this organism spreads beneath the forest floor, covering over 2,000 acres—that’s more than 1,600 football fields.

Even more surprising? It’s estimated to be thousands of years old, silently growing as a network of thread-like structures called mycelium, connecting tree roots across vast distances.
