Before becoming the 14th state in 1791, Vermont existed as the Vermont Republic from 1777 to 1791. During those 14 years, it operated as an independent nation with its own constitution, government, postal service, and even its own currency. The republic was not part of the original 13 colonies because both New York and New Hampshire claimed the territory, leading Vermont to declare its independence until it was admitted to the Union.
