Did You Know!
New York was once the capital of the United States.
Most people associate the nation's early history with cities like Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., but from 1789 to 1790, New York City served as the first capital under the U.S. Constitution.
Why it's fascinating:
It was in New York City that George Washington took the first presidential oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall on April 30, 1789. The first U.S. Congress also met there, and many of the foundations of the new federal government were established during the city's brief time as the nation's capital.
Today, many Americans are unaware that before Philadelphia and eventually Washington became the center of federal government, New York City held that historic role.
