Texas Once Had Its Own Embassy in London!

Before joining the United States in 1845, Texas was an independent country known as the Republic of Texas. From 1836 to 1845, it operated its own government, military, and diplomatic missions.

One surprising piece of that history is that Texas maintained a diplomatic presence in London, England, where representatives worked to strengthen international relationships and promote trade.

Even more interesting, the Texas diplomatic office operated above a historic wine merchant’s shop!

Today, a small plaque near London’s St. James’s Palace commemorates the former Texas Legation, which operated there from 1842 to 1845.

Texas remains the only U.S. state to have once maintained this particular diplomatic mission in Britain as an independent republic.
