In the Malheur National Forest, a single genetically connected Armillaria ostoyae (honey fungus) spreads underground across roughly 2,385 acres, or nearly four square miles. Much of the organism consists of an enormous network hidden beneath the forest floor, and scientists estimate it may be thousands of years old.
