Rare Texas Fact: Texas Has an Official State Longhorn Herd

One surprisingly little-known fact about Texas is that the state maintains an official herd of Texas Longhorn cattle as a living reminder of its ranching history.

The Texas Longhorn is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Lone Star State, but the breed was once in danger of disappearing. Longhorns were exceptionally well suited to the harsh conditions of the American Southwest, and after the Civil War, enormous herds were driven from Texas to northern markets along famous cattle trails.

As ranching changed, however, cattle producers increasingly favored other breeds, and the traditional Longhorn became far less common. Preservation efforts eventually helped keep the historic breed from fading away.

In 1969, Texas established its official State of Texas Longhorn Herd. The herd became associated with Fort Griffin, an important frontier location that once sat near some of the great cattle-driving routes of the 19th century.

Today, the animals represent much more than an instantly recognizable pair of horns. They serve as a living connection to the cowboys, cattle drives, frontier settlements, and ranching traditions that played a major role in shaping Texas.

So while millions of people recognize the Texas Longhorn, relatively few realize that Texas actually maintains an official state herd dedicated to preserving this piece of Lone Star history.
