The Desert of Maine is a roughly 20-acre expanse of exposed glacial silt surrounded by Maine forest. Despite its name, it isn't a true desert; the unusual landscape resulted when fine glacial deposits beneath the soil became exposed after farming and erosion.
It makes for a great trivia question because most people would never associate Maine's forests and rocky coastline with a "desert."
