Instead of having separate House and Senate chambers like every other state, Nebraska operates with a single legislative body known as the Nebraska Legislature.

This unique system was adopted in 1937 after being championed by George Norris, who believed a one-house legislature would be more efficient, transparent, and less expensive. Another unusual feature is that Nebraska's legislative elections are officially nonpartisan, meaning candidates do not run with party labels on the ballot.

As a result, Nebraska remains the only state in America with both a single-chamber legislature and a nonpartisan legislative system, making its state government unlike any other in the nation.
