    Did You Know!

Louisiana is home to one of the largest swamp regions in the United States—the Atchafalaya Basin—and it is actually larger than the Florida Everglades in terms of swamp area. The basin stretches across a huge section of south-central Louisiana and contains a mix of wetlands, bayous, cypress forests, lakes, and slow-moving waterways.

What makes the Atchafalaya especially unusual is that it is not just a wilderness area. It also plays a major role in controlling the flow of the Mississippi River. Engineers have spent decades managing the relationship between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers because, without major control structures, the Mississippi could eventually shift much of its flow into the Atchafalaya channel.

That would have enormous consequences for shipping, communities, wetlands, and major ports farther downstream.

The basin is also an important habitat for alligators, bald eagles, black bears, crawfish, and hundreds of species of birds and fish. Because of its size and ecological importance, the Atchafalaya Basin is often described as one of the most significant wetland ecosystems in North America.

Rarely Known Fact About Delaware: The State Has One of the Most Unusual Borders in America

Did you know that Delaware is one of the few states in America with a border shaped like part of a nearly perfect circle?

Known as the Twelve-Mile Circle, this unusual boundary dates back to 1682, when William Penn was granted land extending 12 miles outward from the courthouse in New Castle, Delaware.

Unlike most state borders, which follow straight lines, rivers, or mountain ranges, Delaware’s northern boundary curves in a distinctive circular arc. This makes it one of the most recognizable and unusual state boundaries on a map.

Even more fascinating, the Twelve-Mile Circle played a role in historic boundary disputes involving Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Its unique shape helped create some complicated geographical features that still exist today.

Although Delaware is the second-smallest state in America, its borders hold a surprisingly rich history dating back more than 340 years.

Fun Fact: The Twelve-Mile Circle remains part of Delaware’s official boundary today, making this small East Coast state home to one of America’s most fascinating geographical oddities.

One rarely known fact about Montana is that the state has more cattle than people. Montana is one of the least densely populated states in the country, but it has a long and important ranching tradition. Large cattle ranches stretch across its wide-open plains and valleys, and livestock remains a major part of the state’s agricultural economy.

Because Montana has a relatively small human population spread across a very large area, the number of cattle can exceed the number of residents. It’s a surprising statistic that helps explain why ranching, open land, and cowboy culture are still such a visible part of Montana’s identity today.
