Despite being the smallest U.S. state by land area, Rhode Island has the longest official state name in American history. For nearly 400 years, its official name was "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." The name dated back to the 1600s and reflected the state's colonial origins. In 2020, voters approved a constitutional amendment removing "and Providence Plantations," making the official name simply Rhode Island.

This creates an unusual contrast: the smallest state geographically once had the longest official state name in the nation.
