Texas Once Had an Official Navy… Twice

Most people know Texas was an independent republic, but few realize it actually maintained two separate national navies in the 1800s.

The first Texas Navy (1836–1837) fought Mexico to secure independence, but after it disbanded, Mexico threatened war again — so Texas built an entirely new navy in 1839.

These ships patrolled the Gulf, protected trade routes, and even conducted international diplomacy. When Texas joined the United States in 1845, its navy was absorbed into the U.S. fleet.
