Nebraska Has The Only Unicameral State Legislature In America
Nebraska is the only U.S. state with a legislature consisting of just one chamber instead of the traditional House of Representatives and Senate.
Since 1937, Nebraska has operated with a single legislative body whose members are officially nonpartisan, meaning party affiliations do not appear on legislative election ballots.
Even more surprising, Nebraska’s lawmakers are called senators despite there being no separate state Senate.
Today, Nebraska has just 49 state senators, making it the smallest state legislature in the country.
