Alabama Has an Underwater Ghost Town Hidden Beneath a Lake
One of Alabama’s most fascinating and lesser-known historical facts is that an entire town lies beneath the waters of Lake Martin.
The town of Susannah, located in Tallapoosa County, was among the communities affected when Martin Dam was constructed in the 1920s.
As the Tallapoosa River was dammed and the reservoir filled, former roads, farmland, and parts of surrounding communities disappeared beneath the rising water.
Surprising Fact: When people go boating or fishing on Lake Martin today, they may be traveling over land where Alabama families once lived and worked nearly a century ago.
The community was largely demolished before flooding, so it isn’t an intact underwater town. Nevertheless, its former location remains beneath the lake, preserving a remarkable piece of Alabama history.
